The longest day of the year is a good reason to slow down. Here's where to greet the 2026 summer solstice across the country.

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, the sun climbs higher and stays out longer than on any other day of the year. The word solstice comes from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), naming the moment the sun seems to pause before it turns back toward winter. For thousands of years, across very different cultures, that pause has been a reason to gather and mark the change of season.

You don't need a stone circle to take part. This year, wellness communities across the country are marking the solstice with sunrise flows, sound baths, garden gatherings, and cold plunges, most of them happening over the weekend of June 20 and 21. Here's where to greet the light, city by city.

New York City

Finding stillness in the middle of Times Square sounds impossible, which is the whole idea. Solstice in Times Square: Mind Over Madness Yoga returns for its 24th year on Sunday, June 21, with thousands of mats laid out across the pedestrian plazas between 45th and 48th Streets while traffic and billboards blaze around the breath. Free sessions run from sunrise into the evening. Register early, bring your own mat, and let the noise be part of the practice. It is still the city's defining solstice tradition.

Chicago

Chicago meets the solstice with the lake on one side and the skyline on the other. The highlight is Adler Planetarium Solstice Yoga on Sunday, June 21 at 8 a.m., an outdoor vinyasa class on the museum's Sundial Plaza with wide views back toward the city. If you would rather practice the day before, the Chicago Botanic Garden holds a Summer Solstice Yoga Celebration above the Great Basin on Saturday, June 20, and Theater on the Lake runs a sunrise lakefront session with Barefeet Power Yoga. Three different settings, one shared cue: face the longest day looking out over the water.

Los Angeles

LA treats the solstice as a full wellness block party. The Summer Solstice Wellness Festival, hosted by Lagree213, takes over One Santa Fe in the Arts District on Saturday, June 20 from noon to 3 p.m., with more than a dozen local wellness vendors, live movement demos, a DJ, and a restorative sound bath led by Loraine of Tala's Garden. It is social, sweaty, and very LA, with the reset built in. If you want something quieter, look for the half-day solstice retreats on the Westside that pair yoga, breathwork, and a tea ceremony.

The Bay Area leans toward sound and ceremony. Breathe Bay Area's Summer Solstice Celebration pairs a cacao circle with a full crystal bowl and gong sound bath, while Liquid Breathwork hosts a Summer Solstice Yin and Sound Healing session on Saturday, June 20. Along the coast you will also find beach events that mix outdoor yoga with live sound. The mood is gentle, less about intensity and more about marking the change of season with intention. One note on cacao ceremonies: the practice comes from Mesoamerican lineage, and the best gatherings name those roots.

Austin

Austin keeps the solstice both grounded and fun. Flow Yoga's Summer Solstice Ceremony: Return to Radiance lands on Saturday, June 20, pairing movement, breathwork, live music, and sound healing. Another offering at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a half-day solstice yoga retreat with meditation, a sound bath, journaling, and a walk among native plants. And on June 21, free community classes take over the Texas Capitol lawn for International Day of Yoga.

San Diego's solstice highlight is also one of its most relaxing: the Floating Sound Bath at Spa Pendry in the Gaslamp Quarter. Led by sound healer Jazmine Amelia, the session has you floating in a warm rooftop pool while crystal bowl frequencies move across the deck. It runs through the summer season and is open to locals as well as hotel guests, but spaces are limited, so reserve ahead and confirm the solstice-week date. Next session with spots available: Tuesday, June 30.

Denver

Denver marks the longest day among the plants. Denver Botanic Gardens' Summer Solstice Yoga on June 18 offers an outdoor, all-levels practice of sun salutations among the York Street collections, with advance registration required. Around town you will find smaller add-ons, from park flows with a potluck to neighborhood vinyasa classes that end at the brewery next door. If you are staying through midweek, the Gardens' summer concert series picks up on June 23 for a sunset encore.

Miami

Miami closes the weekend with its most cinematic gathering. The Summer Solstice Sound Bash at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden runs Saturday, June 20 from 7 to 9:30 p.m., as the South Beach Sound Healing Orchestra and media artist dNASAb fill the garden with live music, projection, and sound healing. Herbal elixirs are served beforehand. Bring a mat, a blanket, and bug spray for a lush way to send off the longest day.

Make your own solstice

No event near you? The solstice does not require a ticket. Step outside at sunrise or sunset, put your phone away, and notice how long the light lasts. That is the oldest version of the ritual, and it still works.
